Are you creative?
Are you creative?
Ummmm … Yes. No. Maybe. Sometimes.
There are a range of answers that people like to give but I have long believed it is not a question of IF you are creative but rather HOW are you creative?
It is easy to associate “creatives” exclusively with arty activities but that would be like saying you can only ever exercise in a gym. The truth is people exercise in many different ways and the same goes for creativity. If you have ever thought, “What if …” then you have demonstrated a conscious act of creativity.
There is no requirement to paint like Picasso or play piano like Mozart. You can be creative at any time.
My digital skills workshops bring me into contact with lots of individuals brimming with “What if…?” thoughts. So what is the trick to being more creative? Well, for starters, how many times in a day do you think ‘What if…? How long do you spend dwelling on that thought? Do you ever share that thought with others, discuss it, act on it?
Our brains react to all kinds of stimuli; taking a walk, chatting with a friend, watching television etc. Any one of these can trigger a ‘What if…?’ idea.
The problem many of us encounter is when an idea hits a roadblock. The ‘What If …’ moment is usually very exciting but as you follow that train of thought you hit an obstacle. Sometimes, that comes in the form of a mental block, criticism from others or a lack of resources or skills to take it further. How many times has that happened to you?
This is why we all need a little bit of creative support now and then. It does not mean that you are not creative but we all have strengths and weaknesses and we can all thrive in the right setting.
I will be using my platforms to explore creativity further and I invite you to join me on my journey. I will be collaborating with other creatives and sharing ideas on creative development as I go. I will tell you more about the 8 creative qualities that I design my workshops around and what I am working on each month.
Happy New Year! Roll on 2023!
